Add up lanyard length, absorber extension and body height before trusting one. A self-retracting lifeline keeps slack out and arrests a fall in a much shorter distance, which is why it wins wherever fall clearance is tight.
Height safety equipment gets a visual check before every use, and periodic inspection by a competent person on a documented schedule. Any equipment that has arrested a fall is retired immediately, whatever it looks like. Energy absorbers and stitching do their job once. Webbing equipment also ages: cuts, UV fade and chemical damage all end its life early.

No. Anything that has arrested a fall, whether harness, lanyard, absorber or SRL, comes out of service immediately. Energy absorbers are single-use by design, and damage from an arrest isn't always visible.
