A dee shackle is for a straight, in-line pull: one sling eye to one lifting point. Load it sideways and the legs bend. A bow shackle's rounded body gives room for more than one sling eye and takes angled or multi-leg loads, at a reduced working load limit the manufacturer publishes. If more than one thing connects to the shackle, or the pull isn't straight, use a bow.
A screw pin does up by hand and suits rigs that go together and come apart the same day. A safety shackle, the bolt, nut and split pin type, is for connections that stay rigged, get lifted repeatedly, or see vibration that can back a screw pin out. Never replace a shackle pin with a bolt. The pin is a rated part of the shackle, a bolt isn't.
A shackle rated for lifting carries its working load limit, its size, its grade and the maker's mark on the body. In Australia the standard to ask about is AS 2741. If a shackle has no markings, it is hardware, not lifting equipment, and it has no place in a lift no matter how solid it looks.

Manufacturer's published figures for grade S screw pin bow shackles (Beaver). Other grades, patterns and stainless lines carry different ratings, so the stamp on the shackle in your hand is always the number that counts.
Working load limit. You'll also see SWL, safe working load, which is the older term for the same thing. It's the maximum load the shackle is rated to lift in normal use. The safety factor above the WLL is the manufacturer's margin for the unexpected, not spare capacity. If the lift is heavier than the WLL, use a bigger shackle.
A dee shackle, no. It is built for a straight pull. A bow shackle can take angled loads, but the WLL drops as the angle grows, and manufacturers publish the reduction. When in doubt, size up and keep the pull as straight as you can.
Galvanised carries the same rating and costs less, which makes it the right answer for most site work. Stainless is for environments that eat zinc: marine work, washdown areas, chemical exposure.
A visual check before every use, plus a documented periodic inspection by a competent person. The manufacturer and the relevant standard set the interval, and sites commonly run quarterly for equipment in regular service. A shackle with a worn crown, a bent pin or unreadable markings comes out of service regardless of the schedule.
