Steel wire rope, ferrule-secured wire rope slings and their fittings: thimbles, ferrules, grips and tensioners.
Wire rope slings shrug off what destroys soft slings: heat, abrasion, rough loads with edges. They're the pick for steel, hot work and loads that would cut webbing. The trade-off is weight, less flexibility, and a load surface that can mark what it lifts. The Australian standard to ask about for steel wire slings is AS 3569.
A lifting sling's eyes are formed with swaged ferrules, pressed on with dies matched to the rope. That's what carries the rating. Thimbles keep the eye's shape and protect the rope from the pin. Wire rope grips, the U-bolt clamps, are for guys, fences and standing rigging, never for forming a lifting sling. A gripped eye has no lifting rating at all.
Broken wires are the tell: clusters of them, or any broken wire at a ferrule. Kinks, crushing, birdcaging and rust past surface staining all end a rope's service life too. A wire sling with a damaged eye or an unreadable tag comes out of service the same as any other sling.
No. Grips are for standing rigging: guys, stays, fences. A lifting sling's eyes must be ferrule-secured (swaged) or spliced by someone competent, with a tag carrying the rating.
Heat, sharp or abrasive loads, and anywhere a soft sling would be cut or melted. Wire gives up flexibility and adds weight, but it survives conditions synthetics don't.
Look for broken wires, kinks, crushed sections, corrosion and damage around the ferrules and eyes, and check the tag is legible. Broken wires in clusters, or any at a ferrule, end it.
