Chain grades explained: what G30 to G100 actually means

The grade number stamped on a chain link isn't marketing. It tells you the strength of the steel. Higher grade means stronger steel for the same link size, which is why a 10mm Grade 80 chain lifts far more than a 10mm general-purpose chain.

The short version

  • Grade 30 (proof coil / general link): general purpose chain. Gates, barriers, tie-downs around the yard. Not for lifting.
  • Grade L / Grade 43 / Grade 70: tested and transport chain. Grade 70 is the go-to for load restraint on trucks. Still not for overhead lifting.
  • Grade 80 and Grade 100: alloy lifting chain, rated for overhead lifting and used in chain slings, chain blocks and lever hoists. Grade 100 gives roughly 25% more capacity than Grade 80 at the same size.

Why it matters

Overhead lifting puts people under the load. Lifting-rated chain is made from heat-treated alloy steel, batch tested, and stamped so it can be identified and traced. Using transport or general chain in a lifting application is how people get hurt. The steel simply isn't made for it.

What to check before you lift

  • The grade stamp on the links (G80, G100, or the maker's equivalent marking)
  • The WLL tag on the sling assembly. If the tag's missing or unreadable, the sling is out of service
  • Wear, stretch, gouges, and bent or cracked links
